The Comeback of Denim Jackets

The fashion cycle is never-ending, and I’m always fascinated with what it recycles from our past generations, and then calling it new, chic, and fresh. What seems to be on a comeback trend, right in time for fall, is denim jackets. Denim jackets were trendy in the late 80’s through the 90’s, and were especially popular with the grunge rock music scene (I’m thinking specifically of Kurt Cobain of Nirvana). Yet, other celebrities were also brandishing their sometimes bedazzled, or embroidered – as in the case of Bob Dylan, with whom I have a weird attraction (don’t judge me!) – denim.

While total bedazzlement seems a bit much to me, a small, simple design can be effective in creating a less edgy (or more edgy, as the case may be) look. I’m thinking of a couple of jewel-like, gold, or silver cufflinks or buttons on the breast pocket or collar. Anything more than a functioning accessory (like a button or cufflink) might over-do it, unless it is well-placed and slight. Embroidery, too, can have a very a chic, original look to it if not too dominating. The military bands across the torso and cuffs are especially sharp, I think.

With the coming fall season, denim jackets are on the rise in stores and online. Macy’s, Old Navy, American Eagle, and Gap are all stores that offer a variety of denim jackets, ranging from the pricier, high quality denim like the True Religion brand to the more affordable brand at Old Navy. A variety of different washes are available, as well, so you can take your pick between classic dark blue, or a more powdery blue or white washed.

I’ve had a light-weight black denim jacket for a number of years, and I find it extremely versatile. Because it’s black, I find I can wear it with my blue jeans, without looking like I’m in a denim jumpsuit. Pairing a blue denim jacket with blue jeans often has that appearance. In the winter, I like to wear it over a zip-up hoody to create a sport jacket kind of look, as well as being quite comfortable and warm.

For the fall season, denim jackets are an excellent fashion resource to have, for both men and women, because of their functionality as a light jacket, or part of layers for colder weather. They create an edgier look than a soft hoody or North Face jacket, and so, can add a new level of flexibility to your fall/winter wardrobe.
