Model Spotlight: Kate Moss
Kate Moss. Just saying her name, makes you think immediately of fashion. So it’s no wonder she’s one of the most popular models around.
Moss has been modeling since she was 16, though she was scouted at 14. At only 5’6 and a size 0/2, she soon became known as the “anti-supermodel” of the 1990s. She began working against such supermodels as Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell, who were known for their curvaceous and tall figures.
Moss’ introduction into the fashion industry was a whirlwind change for models. Her heroin chic look became extremely popular at the time, and she’s credited with introducing the skinny look, which has caused some controversy over the years. Moss’ ultra skinny look led many models to strive to be size zeros, and subsequently has led to more eating disorders in the modeling community.
But Moss never let her skinny look bother her during the 90s, and instead started booking tons of campaigns. She’s done campaigns for such fashion brands as Gucci, Calvin Klein and Chanel, and she’s appeared in almost all international versions of Vogue, including 30 times on the cover of British Vogue alone. And she’s constantly on Forbes list of top earning models.
What’s most interesting about Moss’ career though is after her infamous cocaine scandal back in 2005, she came back stronger then ever. While top brands like H&M and Chanel dropped her, others came to her defense. Dior continued to use her in their campaigns, Alexander McQueen defended her, and then only a year later, she had booked 18 modeling contracts, with such companies as Burberry, Rimmel, and Virgin Mobile. She even designed a collaboration line with Kate England for Topshop.
Aside from modeling, Moss is also known for her personal life. She’s married to The Kill’s guitarist Jamie Hince, whom she married in July 2011 in a dress by John Galliano. Prior to that, she had a well documented and crazy relationship with Pete Doherty, and had a child with Dazed and Confused editor Jefferson Hack. Their daughter, Lila Grace Moss Hack, was born on Sept. 29, 2002.
Up next for Moss is more campaigns and possibly a little settling down with her husband.
