Fashion Inspiration: Best Coast
Last week, I saw one of my favorite artists, Best Coast, at a rock club in Philadelphia. Best Coast consists of Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno, both California natives. Their sound is most often classified as garage or surf rock, lo-fi, and indie rock. Their debut album, Crazy For You, was released in 2010 and their most recent album, The Only Place, debuted in May. Now that you have a bit of background, let’s delve into the lead singer’s wardrobe. While Bethany Cosentino may not be known for her fashion sense, her ability to mix girly pieces with edgy, rock-inspired separates is worth taking a peek at.
She is best known for sundresses in floral patterns, floppy hats or fedoras, and thigh-high stockings. Her style has been characterized as hipster-chic, but she also utilizes vintage elements as well. While she is mostly seen in dark, muted colors like black, gray, and white, she also incorporates color and print into her outfits. She most often completes her outfits with black thigh-high stockings and black or brown booties, giving her that signature urban hipster meets California cool look.
Her signature style had a big payoff when Bethany was approached by Urban Outfitters to design a capsule collection for their vintage Urban Renewal line. The line consists of shorts, dresses, crop tops, flowy Stevie Nicke-esque tops, and a few 80’s inspired jackets. The line debuted in online and in stores in early May and is still available on UrbanOutfitters.com. And better yet, the merchandise is discounted, so if you want to take a page out of Bethany Cosentino’s style book, head on over to the site!
