Sex Sells; Fifty Shades of Grey Merchandise
I can’t speak for everyone, but I would believe most girls fantasize about a man taking complete control in the bedroom. Or should I mention that most women have been lately fantasizing about “red room”. Whether you have read it or not, “Fifty Shades of Grey” has been a national phenomenon. Teenagers to grandmothers have been spotted reading this famous novel and it is about time that the fashion industry has taken advantage of its’ popularity.
E.L. James’s book series describes the story of Anastasia Steele, a recent college grad, who interview’s a mysterious, powerful, and kinky businessman, Christen Grey. From then on, Grey is fascinated by Anastasia and introduces her to the world of S&M. Because of these books, hardware stores have seen an increase in sales of rope and other bondage equipment. Females have mainly bought these products! Also, Brooks Brothers has seen the sale of silvery ties skyrocket because of the tie on the cover.
E.L. James has selected a company called Caroline Mickler Ltd. as global licensing agent for merchandise based on her novels. Lingerie, bedding, perfume, home furnishing, apparel, beauty products, jewelry, and stationary have stemmed from “Fifty Shades of Grey”.
These “mummy porn” novels have popularized an industry like never before. 13 million copies of these books have been sold in the U.S. and Focus Features has bought movie rights for $5 million. I would like to see how they are going to make this raunchy novel into a movie without making it all pornography. Personally, I am very eager to find out whom they cast for Christian Grey because he is now the new, sexier version of Edward Cullen.

I consider the 50 Shades trilogy to be in my list of favorite books. In fact, I’ve read them multiple times, and keep all three ‘active’ on my Kindle. Plus, I’m constantly thinking about it. Sure, sex sells and makes a normal, functioning person get hot and bothered, but you’ve got to admire the love story that develops between two *consenting* adults.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the books (I wouldn’t read them over and over if I didn’t), but the best reward has been conversations with women (and some men) encouraging them to read the books and experiment in their relationships. The books definitely promote confidence. A dear friend of mine, married 10 years, read the trilogy over a weekend and finally embraced her inner goddess to make love with the lights ON. C’mon, let your freak flag fly …. in whatever way is comfortable for you!!!!!
As far as the movie, I seriously doubt I’ll watch it. I’m a really visual person and I’m afraid the pleasure of reading the books will be ruined by the movie, poor acting, and/or plot development. Besides, books are always better than the movies. Don’t worry, my inner goddess and I are going to enjoy the sight of Matthew McHottness in “Magic Mike” this weekend. I’m keeping Christian Grey, and his 50 shades, in my imagination. Laters, Baby!
