Back to Basics: Wardrobe Staples
Buying on a budget? Make sure you have these key items in your closet. They’re never out-of-style and can make an appearance in every season. The most important thing about these staples is quality: you only want to purchase these items once, with the intent of having them forever. The nice thing about these basics is you can mix and match to create several different outfits just by swapping a few pieces.
First, let us start with tops: simple, yet quality, t-shirts. Stick to neutrals like black and white. A white button up is always classic, too. Both of these can be paired with jeans, a high-waisted skirt, or a pair of leggings. Next, a black blazer. You really can’t go wrong with this. Don’t forget a few cardigans either; I prefer mine to be loose with no closure, and to be about mid-thigh length. I own a charcoal gray one that goes with everything.
Next, you will need some basic bottoms. A dark pair of skinny jeans is an essential. Plain and simple, there is no way you could disagree. To dress up, you could go with a pair of high-waisted black pants or an A-line skirt, both great classic pieces that won’t steer you wrong.
You can’t forget ab0ut that little black dress, either. I know it sounds cliché, but clichés became clichés for a reason. Try to pick a classic and simple cut so it can last you through many, many seasons.
Okay, now on to shoes. A pair of pumps is crucial. A neutral color would probably be best. I would recommend black or nude. Don’t forget closed-toed, black flats and a pair of tall leather boots for the colder weather.
Accessories are a bit more personal, so I won’t give too much guidance, but I will say a few scarves, necklaces, and a couple of cocktail rings would be vital. Don’t forget to purchase a watch, either. It’s a necessity. I personally would spring for a larger gold or silver men’s-inspired watch. They are a classic piece that goes with just about everything.
I can’t leave out my current go-to piece. This might not apply to all, but my personal must-have is a black silk tank top. I wear it with everything: skinny jeans, high-waisted denim shorts, and even skirts. You can dress it up, or down, depending on the occasion. It can transition to any season with the simplicity of adding a cardigan in cooler weather.
